Alzheimer's Scholarship Challenge
(Our Unique, Youth Leadership Program)

One of our more rewarding programs is the Alzheimer's Scholarship Challenge because nothing beats working with students and helping young minds develop their skills and realize their full potential while getting involved with the Alzheimer's CURE Foundation, Inc. This is a Youth Leadership Program that helps to form tomorrow's leaders.

We implement this program at the high school and college level. The purpose of it is to help students develop their marketing, public relations, fundraising and event-planning skills. We work closely with the students every step of the way and help them develop and plan events. The majority of the funds they raise for us from these events goes into our Alzheimer's Prize Fund, specifically towards the Alzheimer's Prize, the money that will be awarded to the scientist(s) who discover the successful treatment - the Cure - for Alzheimer's disease. A small percentage goes towards our Educational Programs, Community Outreach and other programs and 5% goes back to each participating school in the form of a scholarship.

This scholarship is something completely different from our general Alzheimer's CURE Foundation Scholarship Fund and is awarded at the end of each semester to every participating school. It is up to the school to select the recipient of this scholarship as long as the student falls within our guidelines: an academically high achiever who will go on to study (or is studying) in a discipline that will in some way benefit Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. If one of the students who actively participated (as a volunteer, intern or co-op) in this program meets with our requirements, then this student will be the preferred recipient of the scholarship awarded to that school.

On June 4th, 2008 we awarded the first Alzheimer's CURE Foundation Scholarship to Ms. Stephanie St. Louis, a Mt. Pleasant High School student (in Providence, RI) who participated in this program. Today, Stephanie is studying at the New England Institute of Technology. By the end of the fall/winter semester, a second Alzheimer's CURE Foundation Scholarship will be awarded, this time to a URI student, that has yet to be determined.

Beginning in the Spring 2009 semester, all students who meet certain goals while participating in the Alzheimer's Scholarship Challenge will become a part of our Youth Leadership Wall of Fame and have their photo and bio on this page under the name of their school.

To find out more information and get your school involved in this unique program, please email us at info@alzcure.org or call us at 401-473-7019. It is our goal to eventually have every high school and college in the US participate in the Alzheimer's Scholarship Challenge!
