Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that initially affects the brain and progressively the person’s ability to function. It is considered a form of dementia, the most common form of dementia and amongst the most severe. Memory loss is one of the first symptoms that affects the patient and probably the first that is noticed by the family. It is believed that beta-amyloid plaques - sticky substances formed in the brain – along with “tangles”, are responsible for blocking the transmission of information between neurotransmitters. The nerve cells eventually die. This is just one of the possible causes/theories. Alzheimer’s has also been attributed to other factors.

Today, it is believed that the progression of Alzheimer’s disease may be somewhat slowed with various medications such as Aricept, Exelon, Razadene and Namenda. The latter, also known as memantine, although it was available in Europe for a while, has only been FDA approved a few years ago – in October of 2003. The existing treatments for Alzheimer's do not stop or reverse progression of Alzheimer's, but it is believed that the progression of the disease is somewhat slowed down.
